The Mont Saint Michel

Built on the island of the Mont-Tombe (tomb on the hill) in 700, the village of the Mont Saint Michel represents almost 13 centuries of religious and architectural traditions. The silhouette of Mont Saint Michel, surrounded by sea and sand, is one of the most enchanting sights in France, called “La Merveille de l’Occident” ( The Wonder of the West).

The Mont Saint Michel is crowned by a fortified abbey that almost doubles its height. Pilgrims known as Miquelots journeyed from afar to honour the cult of Saint Michel the Archangel. A golden statue of Saint Michel is at the top of the spire. From 1879, a causeway linked the Mont Saint Michel to the mainland; before, extremely strong tides in the bay act as a natural defence. They rise and fall with the lunar calendar and can reach speeds of 30 km/h (18 mph).
In The Mont Saint Michel’s unique street, “Cour de l’Avancée”, men and women uphold the tradition of the shopkeepers of the Middle Ages who for over a thousand years have looked after visitors and pilgrims in search of a souvenir of their stay at “The Wonder of The West”. Specialities include copperware, Pottery and Chinaware.

The Mont Saint Michel is also famous for its Hotels and Restaurants, with the traditional Omelette, salt field lamb shops and seafood specialities from its bay.
