Fontainebleau - Barbizon - Vaux le Vicomte

Fontainebleau, has been commissioned by François 1st, the Renaissance King and modelled after Florentine and Roman styles. The sovereigns’ "State Apartments" evoke the sumptuousness of the Court of France until the end of the 19th century. Napoleon 1st appreciated staying there.

Beetween 1849 and 1875, Barbizon attracted around sixty painters, most of them landscape artists, who had come to paint in the forest of Fontainebleau. The flat fields buffeted by the wind inspired Millet’s “The Angelus”. You will feel this artistic atmosphere at the Auberge Ganne, a fabulous place frequented by the painters who decorated the walls and furniture to pay for their stay.

Nicolas Fouquet, a powerful court financier of Louis XIV , challenged the architect Le Vau and the decorator Le Brun to build an exceptional residence. They will be helped by Le Notre for the gardens. This creation lead Fouquet to his downfall. The Sun King, wishing to be seen as the only bright star in the kingdom, was irritated by such a show of magnificence. Three weeks later, he ordered Fouquet’s arrest (by D’Artagnan, one of the three Musketeers) and to confiscate all his estates.

Fouquet stayed in jail until his death. Louis XIV commissioned the very artists who had created the sumptuous décor of Vaux Le Vicomte for the glorious Château de Versailles...
