The D-Day Landing BeachesDecided in 1943, at the Quebec conference, Overlord, the most important landing operation of the Second
World War, began during the night of the 5th to the 6th June 1944 when three Airborne divisions
were dropped on both flanks of the front (Pegasus Bridge and Sainte Mere Eglise). Several hundred rangers launched a heroic attack to capture the fortified position of Pointe du Hoc.
Meanwhile, between 6.30 a.m. and 7.30 a.m., 135,000 men and roughly 20,000 vehicles landed on five beaches:
The American troops on Utah Beach and Omaha Beach and The British, The Canadian troops
and a contingent of Free French Commandos on Juno Beach, Gold Beach and Sword Beach. That was the beginning of the end for the Third Reich forces. You will feel this emotion at the American Cemetery of Saint-Laurent sur Mer (Omaha beach) with its 9,385 Carrara Marble graves. |
